first, we're eating lunch downstairs at the kkg and i'm chatting with some of my friends about their anatomy class. i'm not a big fan of talking about anatomy class, since the idea that some of my cute little blonde sorority sisters are spending hours each day slicing up dead people like it's no thing pretty much makes me want to cower in a corner. so naturally, knowing this, they decided to share a lovely story with me about a boy in their class.
in anatomy, the monday/wednesday/friday classes share their cadavers with the tuesday/thursday classes. the body that my friend meredith had worked on the first day of class had been replaced with another when she came to her second class on wednesday. apparently, a boy in the group who was supposed to work on that same body in the tuesday/thursday class was actually the cadaver's GRANDSON. i kid you not. fortunately, someone figured that out before the boy saw his grandfather all sliced open.
thank you, sweet friends. after that charming lunch anecdote, i sat pale-faced and grasping the table for a good 15 minutes before i could drag myself up the stairs to seek refuge under my covers.
perhaps i should have considered this haunting story an omen, because another death greeted me in my room. my laptop, which has been diseased for some time now, held on just long enough for me to witness the last moments of its life. i did all i could to resuscitate it, but i was clearly too late to help. after a couple of minutes of producing a symphony of decidedly unhealthy noises, the screen froze as the computer let its death rattle and finally seemed to be at peace.
completely ignoring the larger question of where laptops go when they die, i'm left now only to wonder if i shouldn't have some kind of funeral. i believe there might be a place behind madpony headquarters where it could be laid to rest with a modest memorial service.
RIP, sony notebook. without you, i'm empty inside. and stuck using dial-up aol on one of your ancestors in the basement.
