the very least.
we moved in last friday, full of optimism and enthusiasm. until we opened the door. gashes, holes, shoddily patched holes, and mysterious black marks - and that was merely the living room walls. our carpet throughout the apartment was blessed with a variety of stains in rainbow colors. katie's closet was absolutely stuck in the closed position. someone had kindly left us three little mini burritos in the oven. and conner promptly broke the microwave. obviously, we were off to a lovely start.
after getting past the initial shock of our less than beautiful apartment, nothing truly eventful happened until last night when i decided to finally do a load of laundry. i dumped my reds into the washing machine, tossed in a couple of tide tablets, and randomly twirled the buttons.
and nothing happened.
at first, i wasn't terribly concerned. laundry is still a fairly new addition to my list of tricks, and i simply assumed that i was doing something wrong. i dragged my more domestically-experienced roommate over to the machine. after much examination and button twirling, we both concluded that i had done everything perfectly, and the machine was simply broken.
i began hauling my clothes out of the washer, only to discover a pool of stagnant water at the bottom of the machine. i tossed my dirty, wet clothes into a trash bag, broke down, and called mom. unfortunately, she was without any good washer-fixing advice, and maintenance doesn't seem terribly concerned with our predicament. so my clothes remain in a trash bag, possibly for all eternity.
later that evening, we had even more fun. having obviously not learned my lesson with the earlier cleaning disaster, i decided to be super helpful and run the dishwasher. after a bit of sorting through our cabinets, i found the dish washing soap. being (miraculously) fully aware of the differences between dish washing soap and dish washer soap, i was a bit unsure that i had the right kind. however, i decided to trust conner, who assured me that he had used this very bottle of soap in his old apartment all year. i again randomly twirled some knobs, the washer sprang to life, and i settled on the couch to watch "back to the future."
two hours later, while seeking movie refreshments, i discovered our soap had rapidly expanded into millions of bubbles floating across our kitchen floor. after a bit of screaming, my roommates joined me in the kitchen. conner declared this our first apartment foam party, much giggling ensued, and we mopped the whole mess up with towels.
two days, folks. two days.
stay tuned for more wacky apartment adventures.
